Engineer - CBF Crane Automation

A fixed term opportunity is now available for an Engineer to manage the implementation of an exciting new automation project for our Carbon Bake Furnace Crane at our New Zealand Aluminium Smelter.

Working closely with a variety of internal and external stakeholders, you will perform a wide array of analysis, specification and design for control system performance, software, safety systems and modifications required to successfully progress the project.

 The successful applicant will:

  • Finalise the automation pilot
  • Develop a business case (including costs) to support each planned phase of the project
  • Complete a detailed safety systems assessment and engineering work
  • Coordinate associated service providers and effectively communicate with operations staff in the Carbon Bake
  • Maintain a general coordination/awareness of ‘on the ground’ activities between all the various parties involved in the project.

 We are seeking someone with:

  • Tertiary qualifications in a suitable engineering discipline (e.g. Electrical or Mechatronics Engineering).
  • Demonstrated experience in electrical and PLC based control systems design, development and implementation ( including PLC programming with IEC 61131-3 Languages)
  • A demonstrated commitment to safety  
  • Strong communication (written and verbal) and influencing skills
  • Technical writing experience (design specifications, reference and user manuals)
  • A passion for technology and an ability to quickly develop new skills
  • High level of computer literacy

 In addition, the following would be highly regarded:

  • Experience in Functional Safety (e.g. IEC 62061, ISO 13849)
  • High Level Programming  (e.g. Visual Studio, C#) & Databases (e.g. SQL)
  • Experience with Schneider PLCs including 984 Ladder Logic
  • Control system communication protocols (e.g. Modbus TCP-IP, EthernetIP)
  • Statistical data analysis skills
